Librem 5 Laptop Mode
The Librem 5 can now change from factors easily. Connect it to a powered
USB-C dock to enable desktop mode. Or connect it to a laptop dock to
turn your phone into a fully working laptop.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos.
The software is quickly improving around connection and detachment of
the docks. Settings has a new section to configure any attached displays.
You'll also find a new dock toggle in the top dropdown. This allows you
to drag around windows freely as well as disables the onscreen keyboard.
It's time we take back control of our phone and reclaim it as the
general-purpose computer that it is.
Librem 5 4500mAh Battery Upgrade
Because we increased the Librem 5 mass production chassis size by 3mm,
we were able to upgrade the battery from 3600 mAh to 4500 mAh.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos.
Disabling hardware when you don't need it is a good way to increase your
Librem 5 battery life even further. From a full charge, the mass
production Librem 5 should last from 6 hours with screen on and all
hardware-enabled up to 14 hours when idle with screen and WiFi off.

publishing some image screenshots to snapshot this momentous occasion.

T1 Modem Variant Works With Librem 5
When we first announced that the Librem 5 would default to the BM818
modem, we listed US and EU variants of the modem that support different
frequencies that are in use in those regions. While there are frequency
overlaps throughout the world (this is why you can take a phone between
the US and Europe and have it work for the most part), having a modem
that supports all of your local frequencies ensures the best performance.
Ever since it was discovered that there was a T1 variant to the BM818
modem for the Librem 5, we have gotten questions from our friends in the
Asia Pacific region about whether we would offer it. We didn’t want to
announce anything until we had modems and could test them in the Librem
5 to ensure they work but I’m happy to announce we just completed that
testing and it works!
We will be adding the T1 modem variant to our shop shortly, and for
customers in that region, when you get your shipping notification email,
we will default to that modem, but you can of course choose the US or EU
variant if you prefer.
The Journey to Shipping the Librem 5
I was a pretty avid mountaineer when I lived in the pacific northwest,
as a child I set a goal to summit every mountain in the Olympic National
Forest. There are a lot of them, and I reached that goal over the course
of many many years. I summited with my father one weekend, then my
brother the next, and my friend the third, and a hiking group the
fourth. Sometimes two in a day, sometimes taking a break due to weather,
sometimes failing to summit and retrying again the next month.
Mountaineers have perseverance.
With Purism, and specifically the Librem 5, I set a lofty goal of
delivering a mobile phone that does not spy on you, avoids Big Tech
entirely, ensures that all the software is freedom respecting with the
source code released, that is the most secure phone available on the
market, while also making it convenient to use. I knew back in 2014 when
I formed Purism that this was going to be a multi-year very challenging
journey, and I also knew that there would be many summits toward this
much larger goal.
Our team of experts got us to the most meaningful summit today. This is
the Mt. Olympus of the Olympics, it is the day we have all been waiting
to celebrate for many years, the day we ship to customers the first
mass-produced Librem 5 phones off the production line.
The journey to get to this summit has been long, challenging, and
remarkably fun. We, as a team, set off from the trailhead years ago and
met every challenge with an understanding that perseverance will get us
one step closer to our first summit, second summit, and continue to
celebrate each accomplishment along the way. Our team is the most
talented group of people I have ever met, each one individually
exceptional, and together the most remarkable team ever assembled in
technology. I know we can continue to deliver on the near-impossible due
to the aligned belief that people should be respected by their technology.
On our journey, we marched past selecting hardware that has never been
put in a mobile phone—knowing we could do it—and did it. We banded
together when the storm of kernel development was told to be impassable;
and we passed it. We roped up when the crevasse of power optimization
was deep and wide, and we crossed it. We plodded upward and wrote a
convergent operating system for laptop and mobile when the largest
companies in technology failed year-after-year to do so. We continued to
answer every challenge with “Yes we can” as we all worked together
knowing there are many summits in our future, and that larger goal is
what we are all here for.
I am proud of our team beyond what any length of compliments can show,
the best, brightest, and most talented people work at Purism and it is
entirely due to their perseverance that we are celebrating this summit
today. Congratulations to all our supporters, our team, and our
customers who over the course of many years and many months to come,
will be enjoying this summit view.
We have a lot more trailheads to start and mountains to summit, and each
day, week, month, and year, we will continue to go step-by-step toward
our very lofty goal of delivering convenient technology that fully
respects you and your digital life.
Thank you,
- Todd
Librem 5 Visual Walkthrough
With the Mass-produced Evergreen phone now starting to ship, we put
together a video walkthrough of the launch software as well as an
overview of the final hardware.
Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos.
The Librem 5 ships in a square box with a number of accessories like a
SIM card extractor, headphones, and a wall charger.
Make sure to remove the outside screen protector when your device arrives.
The tolerances around the hardware killswitch and back cover have
improved dramatically from the previous batches. The kill switches are
now labeled and the device is also branded.
When you first log in with the pin 123456, you’ll be greeted by the
welcome dialog. Enter your basic info to start using your Librem 5.
Here are the apps shipping with the Librem 5.
New to the lineup of apps is the Weather app, as well as an email client.
With so much new software being released it’s even more important to
keep up with your updates.
Librem 5 settings are well adapted for use on the go as well as Desktop
use. Here you will find everything from Mobile data settings to a dialog
to change your user pin code.
The top dropdown gives you quick access to a lot of important settings.
You can quickly jump to mobile, WiFi, Bluetooth, or power settings.
We also have a toggle for portrait mode as well as notifications and
flashlight.
The top dropdown is also how you can lock the screen, restart or power
off the device.
The way we close apps has also changed. Now, you can simply swipe up on
the app preview to close it.
The path ahead:
We have made progress around the camera, but until we finish the kernel
driver for the hardware it will be missing from the default apps. Dock
support and convergence features are also not yet enabled by default as
we finish up plug-and-play support in the kernel. We are also finishing
up support for the OpenPGP smart card reader. All of these improvements
will come with future software updates.
Thank you all for the support, we are excited to bring you the Librem 5
phone!
